Up close the dragonfly has a fantastic and mechanical look, like some ingenious and improbable device. Admittedly, I might be among those who would doubt it could fly.
They do have that mechanical look, especially in terms of their heads and faces. I had a dream recently about a huge prehistoric dragonfly. Can't imagine what they were like, really. I think this is an Eastern pondhawk but I could be wrong.
